The Weekender: Columbus Day Weekend

By Alyssa Tomaseck

Long weekend alert! Having Monday off means time to relax, catch up on much needed sleep, and most importantly go out and celebrate! This Columbus Day weekend we have multiple festivals, fashion appreciation events, good eats, and a last chance jewelry sale planned that the whole family can join in on. No one likes to be left out so bring ‘em all! Lets keep these fun filled weekends rolling before the season of dreaded company Christmas parties and inescapable family functions begin.

October seems to be the month of festivals so why not keep the trend going? It’s the perfect time of year to gather with local community people and entertain ourselves wisely with traditional food, drinks and music. The unique touch to this festival is the atmosphere of our historical old city neighborhood. I mean lets face it, brownstones are the new black! Happening between 3rd and Arch Street the surrounding shops, restaurants, galleries and theaters are all participating to make your weekend a little more festive. Come out this Sunday, October 11th, between noon and 6pm to catch all the fun!

One fest, two fest, three fest, four! Got another one coming your way this Saturday, October 10th. Fun for the whole family is going on throughout the day at the Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown along the Delaware River Waterfront. Starting at noon, the 8th annual festival kicks off with a 5k “Fun Run” and continues with other activities until 6pm. And we all know a festival isn’t complete without food vendors, local musicians, as well as a beer garden for the of agers. Don’t worry about finding a baby sitter because the kids have a packed day themselves with a rock wall, obstacle course, moon bounce, and magic show. It’s obvious..this city loves festivals for a reason!

Pizza and meatballs and mozzarella, oh my! The weekend continues into Monday with the celebration of Pizzeria Stella’s 6th anniversary block party. Enjoy Columbus Day eating great food between 2pm and 9pm at “The Shambles” at Headhouse Square across from the restaurant. Signature menu items will be featured along with beer, wine, coffee, and homemade gelato. Don’t let the kids miss out on pony rides, face painting, and a special appearance by the Philly Phanatic. Follow the music to this free outdoor festival and turn those Monday blues into Monday grooves.

For the love of fashion! Strut into the city this weekend to celebrate this year’s Philadelphia Collection. Admire and purchase items from featured pop up shops, as well as trunk and fashion shows with designs by local Philadelphia student and Italian artisans. An array of events will be going on all weekend so check out the web link to get details on times and locations for this popular celebration.

Time is ticking and you don’t want to miss the last few days of the Moving Sale at Bernie Robbins! Deals of up to 70% off include engagement rings starting at $500, watches, bracelets, and other gorgeous diamond pieces. The sale ends this Saturday, October 8th at both Newtown and Randor, Pennsylvania locations. Don’t have anyone to buy for? Treat yourself! You deserve it.
