The Weekender

By Alyssa Tomaseck

Rain or shine it’s the weekend! Philadelphia may not have seen the sun much this week but its time for those clouds to open up and for all of us to enjoy a well deserved few days off. This weekend Tyler Perry is in town and there is a festival dedicated to bacon..what can get better than that?! Maybe the Gift Extravaganza at Bernie Robbins or the Little Smiles Star Ball? Definitely a tie. So whether you’re in the mood to dress your best or put on those leggings and shopping shoes we have all of your weekend events planned for you. Happy Friday!

He’s back and better than before! Tyler Perry is in the city of brotherly love all this weekend staring as Mabel Simmons in the second season tour of Madea on the Run. Merrian Theater at the Kimmel Center is hosting the live stage play that brings laughter and inspiration. Show times vary throughout the weekend so catch Madea before she’s gone!

Attention adult bacon and beer lovers! This Saturday, November 14th, your dreams will come true! The Bacon and Beer Festival is an event hosted by @eatphilly where local restaurants and breweries are coming together to share their best “bacon-based dishes”. I mean who doesn’t love bacon? Purchase your general admission tickets, which includes the entry fee and all tasting of bacon and beer samples, or the VIP ticket for front of line entry, a free t-shirt, and half a pound of meat to take home! Don’t miss this event at 23rd St Armory between 2:30pm and 5:00pm.

The 3rd annual Gift Extravaganza is happening today and tomorrow at Bernie Robbins Jewelers! Receive a free gift with the purchase from your favorite designer and get a Bernie Robbins gift certificate if you spend $500 or more. The holidays are quickly approaching so get a head start on your shopping, or brighten your weekend up and treat yourself to a few new diamonds! Visit the store locations in Randor, Marlton or Somers Point tonight until 7:30pm or tomorrow between 10am and 5pm. Shop on!

Come out this Saturday night to support the Little Smiles children’s charity! The non-profit organization is hosting its 8th annual celebration and fundraiser event for children with life-altering conditions. This year’s theme, “A Night at the Oscars” awards thirteen children for their strong and courageous attitudes. They will arrive in a stretch limo and walk the red carpet in beautiful gowns, jewels and tuxedos, signing autographs for all of their supporters. The event will include cocktails, auctions, dinner and dancing from 6pm to 11pm at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. Buy your tickets now at and support these little fighters that are so well deserving of the night.

Although the weather may not indicate that it’s mid November, the reopening of the Rothman Ice Rink in center city sure will! Tonight, November 13th, the beautiful, family oriented rink will be reopening at Dilworth Park for the season. The skyline views will enhance your experience and a heated tent at the tip of the rink offers warm drinks and food to please the entire family. Admission is only $5 for adults and $3 children with additional skate rentals available. Rothman Ice Rink also offers a four class ‘learn to skate’ session opportunity on Sundays for $70. Who says you have to spend your winter indoors?! Enjoy this great city attraction opening tonight.
