The Weekender

By Todd Scalgione

Well Philadelphia it has been quite a long week filled with lots of work and little play! After the flash flood warning woke everyone up at 4:30am on Wednesday it is safe to say we are all a bit tired. Considering the weather has also been amazing (SARCASM) we need a little break from a rough week! Nothing can stop us from having a relaxed weekend so let’s fill it with awesome ways to chill, play, dance and explore the city. Let’s take a look at what’s going on this weekend in Philadelphia and AC.

DANCE: SATURDAY SALSA ON THE PLAZA
The Plaza at Comcast Center will be hosting a Latin Dance Club intro to salsa, bachata and merengue! A playful and sensual escape from a boring Saturday afternoon that requires no dance experience at all. Singles are totally welcome as well so don’t be shy and grab a guy (or girl) and get moving. Each participant will receive a $5 voucher to The Market & Shops at Comcast Center as well as a $50 gift card & free class voucher for Society Hill Dance Academy! Starts at 1:30pm.

SIP: THE JUICE MERCHANT GRAND OPENING
Healthy juices and dining options are now available in Manayunk! The Juice Merchant is a delicious and nutritious juicery and café that offers a rich selection of healthy options. Zagat.com even named this place one of the seven best smoothie and juice joints in Philly. Head here on Saturday for food and beverage sampling, prizes, a live dj and a raffle from 12-3pm!

TASTE: UNIVERSITY CITY DINING DAYS
Dining Days is back from July 16-26 to offer three course meals at the neighborhoods high end restaurants for only $15-35 per person. Whether you’re a student or just want a fabulous meal for a deal you can choose from over 30 of the area’s most delicious places including Han Dynasty, City Tap House, Dock Street Brewery and coZara. I have eaten at many of these restaurants and they’re delicious!

GO: DO (G)A(Y)C
Atlantic City will be hosting the Mid-Atlantic’s largest gay beach party this weekend. Multiple parties and events will be occurring including some drag queen fab fun! Check out the Calendar of full events here:

SEE: DISCOVERING THE IMPRESSIONISTS AT THE ART MUSEUM
I am usually not one to head to a museum but recently I heard that this exhibit is beautiful. Head to the Philadelphia Museum of Art this Saturday or Sunday to check out paintings by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Manet, Pissarro, and their visionary art dealer and champion, Paul Durand-Ruel. These men struggled for admiration during a time when art of this from wasn’t necessarily appreciated. It’s actually very interesting.

DO: PREIT SOUTH JERSEY RESTAURANT WEEK (SUNDAY FUNDAY!)
This Sunday join the Cherry Hill Mall, Moorestown Mall and Voorhees Town Center for the 3rd Annual PREIT South Jersey Restaurant week. Though the deal will be happening all week from the 12th to the 19th this still makes for a Sunday funday! This deal features 18 participating restaurants offering special menus and pricing. Mall shops will also have promotions and offers! Yay!
