Coachella Style Report

This past weekend, I braved the sweltering heat of Indio, California to take in the stellar lineup of this year’s Coachella music festival. While the bands drew me in – The Black Keys, St. Vincent, The Shins, Arctic Monkeys, Real Estate and of course the famed Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg performance – the fashion spotting certainly added to the fun! Here are some of the trends seen at Coachella:

High-Waisted Shorts

By far the most prevalent trend worn by all ages, shapes and sizes was high-waisted shorts. From vintage cutoff denim to more swingy styles, high-waisted shorts were a festival staple adding to the overall vintage-inspired fashion scene.

Sheer Maxi Skirts

Sheer maxi skirts with either a mini skirt lining, hot pants, or bikini bottoms underneath, were another big trend seen throughout the festival. I spotted tons of traditional maxi skirts and the ultra-trendy high-low maxi skirts in a rainbow of colors, patterns, and textures.

Midriff Tops

After seeing midriff tops all weekend (often paired with the high-waisted shorts or sheer maxi skirts mentioned above), I almost wished I’d given this Spring 2012 trend a try. If there’s ever an excuse to bare your belly in public, it’s in 105 degree weather. And, compared to all of the bikini clad concert goers, this look is pulled together and cool in more ways than one.

Lace & Crochet

I expected to see plenty of hippie fashion, including plenty of crochet, and Coachella didn’t disappoint; in earthy tones, crochet tops, dresses, and trimmings were a timeless, summery staple. As for lace, I usually associate it with more sweet and sophisticated looks, but after seeing it in all shades of neon and layered over a black bandeau or bikini top, I saw a whole new side of one of my favorite fabrics.

Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of fashion missteps – barely-there bikinis, smudgy body paint, bad tie-dye and outlandish costumes, but all added to the free-spirited feel (and incredible people-watching) of Coachella.
